Intellect is often represented as scores, grades and assessments in today fast and competitive world. Contrary to that idea, as a mentor and coach, I think of intellectual quotient (IQ) as a measure of our abilities which can dynamically change over time; it is a more than just a result of a test. Often it is the logical reasoning and problem-solving that people relate to IQ, but its actual influence reaches much further than just the percentiles of general academic achievement.
Simply, IQ can be defined as individual’s capability to receive and process knowledge and practical skills. For many IQ has been the measure of cognitive abilities, such as: logical reasoning, mathematical skills, language skills, and spatial awareness. But abilities such as these are but a fraction of the totality of intelligence. The core of intelligence is the capacity to process information based on cognitive skills, the capacity to think critically and the ability to make sound decisions.
Although a high IQ is mainly associated with academic success, it does not dominate there. Individuals with a strong mind can do so in various areas, such as:
On one hand IQ is genetic but on the other hand it does not mean it is forever unchanged. Through the practice of right methods, improving cognitive abilities, and elevating the intellectual performance can become a reality. A few of the significant ways to do this are:
Alongside IQ cognitive ability, emotional intelligence (EQ) is also a major contributor in personal and professional success. Factors such as social intelligence (SQ) are also of an equal significance. A high IQ person is capable of showing great emotional and social intelligence since he or she can communicate effectively, work together, and lead with empathy and understanding.
IQ is an essential asset to one’s brain, but it can be harvested and balanced with other intelligences for a healthy enlarged growth. As a mentor and coach, I always encourage people to see intelligence as a journey that continues through the lifelong learning, adjusting, and evolving. Real intelligence is not just about knowing much, but rather it is using knowledge wisely, making good decisions, and forming a positive impact on society.
Through the continuous sharpening of our minds and by the adoption of growth mindset, we can reach our full potential and be able to lead a more fulfilled and successful life.
